Water Wise Ways For Plants

Don’t let the heat get your plants!  It is possible to keep your plants looking good without your water bill skyrocketing like hot Arizona temperatures! Use the following watering tips to take good care of your plants, keep an attractive yard, and have a reasonable water bill:

Be sure to water early in the morning. This reduces evaporation from high daytime temperatures.

Water slowly. This will let the water soak in, and will prevent pounding, which allows mosquitoes to breed and decreases the loss of water from evaporation.

After a significant rain, turn off your irrigation system. Your plants do not need water at this time. Take advantage of the free water! Turn your system back on once the soil is dry.

Water all the roots! Make sure that you water deeply and all around the plant or tree so the water gets to the drip line.

Prune and fertilize all plants properly. The more you prune your plants, the more water is needed. The more fertilizer that is used, the more water is required also. Therefore, try not to prune or fertilize too often.

Perform a visual inspection of your plants daily. If your leaves are wilting or turning yellow, then your plants need more water. If the soil is still moist, no more water is yet needed.

Invest in a drip system. This takes the hassle out of watering early in the morning, and decreases your risk of watering too much or too little!

Water your plants only once or twice a week during the summer.  Adjust your watering schedule to the weather.  Water more often as it gets hotter, and water less often as the temperature decreases.
