Water company seeks to expand service area

Community Water Company of Green Valley wants to expand its service area to include future developments in Sahuarita.
On July 5, the company filed an application with the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) to extend its Certificate of Convenience and Necessity (CC&N) to provide water service to two developing areas within the Town of Sahuarita as well as the Evangelical Free Church of Green Valley (1393 West Mission Twin Buttes Road).
According to Community Water’s new president Mike Weber, the company was approached by Diamond Ventures to provide water to the areas tentatively known as Sahuarita East and Sahuarita West.
“We’re asking to extend the northern portion of our existing CC&N to accommodate future development,” he said.
Sahuarita West is the area to the west side of Interstate-19 north of the old K-Mart. Jim Stahle, town planner for Sahuarita explained that 350 “single family dwelling units” will be going into that subdivision.
Sahuarita East, appropriately on the east side of the freeway, is going through the rezoning process, he said, but will include no more than 320 lots. “In the commercial section, I would guess no more than about the same number maximum. I doubt even that many.” said Stahle.
As for the Evangelical Church, Weber said that they are already an established Community Water customer. If approved by the ACC, the church will be brought into the service are on a more formal basis.
The ACC will be holding a hearing Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. at their Tucson offices, Room 222, 400 West Congress Street. Customers and property owners in the area proposed extension area will be able to make statements or ask questions at that time.
Those with questions or concerns about the expansion, or those who wish to make a statement in support of it may also call the ACC’s Consumer Services Section at 1-800-222-7000.
Weber said that Community Water is required to notify all of the customers and land owners in the expansion area. While he does not expect a negative response, Weber said that he is waiting to see is what kind of a response the application generates.
“This would not prompt any kind of a rate increase,” he assured. “Whether or not there’s some increase down the road remains to be seen, but this expansion would not have any bearing on that.”
The application is available for inspection at the Community Water Company of Green Valley offices, 1501 South La Cañada Drive.
